In August and early September, many of our province’s top junior players represented Saskatchewan at the Rogers Outdoor Junior National Championships. These events take the top qualifying players from each province or region and have them face off for national titles. The events are broken down by age and held at a variety of facilities across the country. Here’s a look at how Saskatchewan faired at each event:

Also representing Saskatchewan in the boy’s draw was Saskatoon’s David Preciado. David had some great matches in singles, including a three-setter in the consolation. On the girl’s side, Nhu Nguyen-Quach of Regina competed well in her singles matches, which also included a three-set battle in the consolation.

Regina’s Teah Chavez (pictured above) had a very strong showing at nationals this year. In the group stage, she placed second in her group (behind Alberta’s Mia Kupres) by recording wins over Janic Durocher of Quebec (7-5, 7-6(6)) and Isabella Asenov of British Columbia (6-4, 6-2). This placed her into the championship flight qualification, where she lost to another seeded Alberta player, Martyna Ostrzygalo. This landed her in Flight #1, where she beat Anastasia Kavounov of Ontario 7-5, 6-4 to reach the semifinals. This means Teah finished 4th in her flight and 12th overall! Teah also competed in the doubles draw with partner Hailey Murphy of Alberta. The girls recorded one win in the first round, but fell in the second.

Saskatoon’s Nicholas Pesenti competed in the boy’s side. Nicholas competed well in his first junior national competition and recorded a win over Manitoba’s Ben Mayes.

On the boy’s side, Saskatoon’s William Preciado and Regina’s Van Nguyen represented Saskatchewan. Both boys ran into tough opponents from Ontario and came up short in singles. In doubles, William and Van teamed up, but ran into another pair of Ontarians early in the draw.

Anya Chavez of Regina represented Saskatchewan on the girl’s side. Anya recorded a great win over Charley Liang of Ontario 6-3, 6-3 before meeting Manitoba’s Reece Carter. Anya fought hard against Reece, but the Manitoban took the win 7-6(12), 6-3. In doubles, Anya played a very close match that was decided in a third set super-tiebreak against a pair from Alberta.

Regina’s Anya Chavez and Saskatoon’s Mary Yowin also fell in the second round after receiving byes.

In doubles, Morgan and Anya teamed up to record three-set wins over Alexandra Jewitt/Jessica Kreutz of Alberta (2-6, 6-3, 10-6) and Sydney Peters/Mathilda Rigby of Ontario (6-2, 2-6, 10-4).
