Lily Wiebe finishes 26th to 28th at U12 Canadian Junior Nationals
Eight year old Lily Wiebe of Saskatoon was the youngest competitor at the Canadian Junior Nationals held July 25 – 30th at the St. Catherines Racquet Club in St. Catherines, Ontario. Lily, who recently finished 2nd at the U12 Prairie Regional Qualifying event participated in her first nationals.
The format of the competition provided plenty of opportunities for the children to play and compete against others from across Canada. Players were put into 8 round robin pools with the winners advancing to the top flight, with 2nd place players going into the 2nd flight and so on.
Lily was placed in 6th round robin group. In her first match Lily played Andreanne Gariepy of Quebec and lost 6-0, 6-2. Her second match was against Ruxandra Andriescu of Ontario and she lost 6-1 6-2. Her final round robin match was against Megan Barber of British Columbia, with Lily fairing much better losing 6-3, 6-3. Lily went into the consolation and won against Katy Lesiuk of Winnipeg 8-4. Lily lost her next match to Natasha Smith in the 4th flight (consolation semi) 8-1 to finish 26 – 28th out of 32 players entered in Canada.
The future is bright for Lily as she has many more years in the U12 division. Good effort Lily Wiebe.
