U of A Saville Open and 5.0 and Below Singles & Doubles Event: Jan 13 – 16, 2005
Members of Team Saskatchewan traveled to Edmonton Alberta to compete in the Saville Open and 5.0 and Below Singles & Doubles Tournament. Twelve junior players from Saskatoon, Regina and Moose Jaw competed in singles and doubles competitions.
Thirteen-year-old Jordan Christiansen was a semi-finalist in the 5.0 and Below Singles. Eric Yee also of Saskatoon reached the Quarter Finals in Singles, as did Hiro Orazwa. Jeet Kapadia, Todd Garriepy and Martin Prusinkiewicz reached the RD 16.
In Women’s 5.0 action, Teo Costin of Saskatoon reached the Semi Finals in singles. In Women’s Open Singles 14 year old, Anna Nelke reached the Quarter Finals of singles. Anna defeated a member of the U of A Golden Bears women’s team in 3 sets, before bowing out to the #2 seed 6-2, 6-2. Katherine Melnychuk and Teo Costin reached the finals of Women’s 5.0 doubles losing in 3 sets to the number 1 seeds. 2-6, 6-0, 6-0.
In Men’s Open Singles, was Saskatchewan’s lone winner defeating fellow Team Saskatchewan member Ronan Conlon 6-4, 4-6, 6-1. Jeet lost in the RD 16 to the #8 Seed 6-2, 6-1. Brad Luciuk lost a thrilling 3 set match 7-5 in the third set. In Open doubles Brad Luciuk and Ronan Conlon lost a tight 3 set match in the opening round.
