Nelke finishes on a strong note at the Lakeshore junior Open: June 5 & 6, 2004
Fourteen year old Anna Nelke of Regina, captured the U14 & U16 Girls titles at the Lakeshore Junior Open. Anna, who recently finished an impressive 17 – 24 in Canada at the U14 Canadian Junior Nationals breezed to the U14 title dropping a total of 5 games in the tournament. In the U14 final, Nelke defeated #2 seed Katherine Melnychuk of Saskatoon 6-1, 6-4. In the U16 final, Anna defeated #1 seed Teo Costin 7-5, 6-0 in the final. Teo Costin won the U18 event defeating Christina Yee 6-1, 3-1 ret.
In other events, Brad Luciuk & Jordan Christiansen both of Saskatoon avenged their previous weeks loses to capture the U18 & U14 titles. In the U18 Final, Brad Luciuk defeated Jeet Kapadia in a very closely contested and hard fought match 7-6, 6-1. While, Jordan Christiansen captured the U14 title defeating Martin Prusinikiewicz of Saskatoon 6-4, 6-3. Jeet Kapadia won his second consecutive U16 title defeating Michael Hurman 6-3, 6-2 in the final.
Lily Wiebe captured the U12 title. While, Karlin Krieger of Melville partnered with Chellan Langley of Yorkton won the U14 doubles event defeating Regina’s Jesse Kullman and Landon Grubb. In the U18 doubles final, Teo Costin and Sean Gross of Regina defeated Jordan Christiansen and Drew Hager of Moose Jaw.
Over 40 singles players
participated in the event making it a very successful junior tournament. The
junior provincial championships will be held June 25 – 27, 2004 in Regina.
