U16 & U18 Canadian Indoor Junior Nationals Re-cap: April 2005
The U16 Canadian Junior Nationals were held in Repentigny QC April 10 – 17, 2005. Four Saskatchewan athletes competed in the event. Anna Nelke of Regina, Adrian Urteaga of Dundurn and Saskatoon’s Michael Hurman, Katherine Melnychuk.
None of the players won a main draw or consolation match, however they competed hard. The prairie team finished 7th place in the team event. Anna Nelke led all Saskatchewan athletes in victories during the team event with 3 wins (1 singles / 2 doubles).
At the U18 Nationals, Ronan Conlon finished 25 – 32 in singles; Brad Luciuk, Teo Costin and Martyna Nowak all finished 33 – 40 in singles. Ronan Conlon of Saskatoon won a consolation match against Matt Danis from the Atlantic Region in straight sets before losing to Alex Labrosse of Quebec. Martyna Nowak served for the first set 5 – 4 and was up 4 –1 in the second before losing to Former National Champion Steffi Gjine of BC 7-5, 7-5. Martyna Nowak and Joanna Woo of Manitoba reached the Quarter-finals of Doubles, losing to Eunice David and Ekaterina Shuleava in straight sets.
Following the conclusion of the U18 Nationals, Team Saskatchewan competed in the ITF event in Burlington, Ontario. Brad Luciuk playing in one of his best matches of his junior career lost a narrow decision to #1 seed and former national champion Jonathan David 6-4, 6-3. In other matches Ronan Conlon lost a tough decision 7-5, 6-3 to Ryan Borczon of Ontario. Ronan held a 5-1 lead in the first set before Ryan stormed back to take the set and the momentum of the match. Teo Costin lost in the first round to Ely Strothers of Alberta 6-0, 6-2, while Martyna Nowak lost in the second round to Nicole Smith of Alberta 6-0, 6-1.
