Lakewood
Indoor Open and 4.5

Oct 22: Top seed Jordan
Christiansen made light work in winning the last Open event for 2007 when he
defeated second seed Adrian Urteaga in straight sets, 6/0, 6/2. The going was
tougher in the doubles however, when Jordan teamed up with Adrian and as
top seeds battled out a close encounter with second seeds John Carroll and Carl
Johnson, winning in 3 sets 6/4,5/7,6/4. Christiansen and Urteaga won the
provincial doubles earlier this year in a very close round robin event that
included Carroll and Johnson (who had withdrawn after Carroll had sustained an
injury).
In
the 4.5 events, Dave Bella continued his winning form after a close battle with
Martin Huard, winning 4/6,6/4, 6/4, while second seed Fiona Conlon captured the
womens singles.

Urteaga
captures Lakeshore Classic title
August
26: Regina Adrian Urteaga of Saskatoon rallied to
win the Mens Open title at the Lakeshore Summer Classic. Urteaga seemed to
do it the hard way, fighting off a 3 set marathon against Kevin Tam of Regina
in the Pool B round robin match, and then rallying from behind to beat Adam Van
Der Merwe, also of Regina, in 3 sets in the semi-finals. In the final, Urteaga
defeated Michael Hurman of Saskatoon in straight sets.
In the 4.5 events, top seed Dave Bella of Melville
defeated 3rd seed Blair Schlosser of Saskatoon, Tim McMahon and Ed Holowaty of
Regina defeated Schlosser and Gord Bell, Gina Escanlar and Lori Parley captured
the womens doubles crown, while Tim and Judy McMahon won the mixed doubles
event. For photos, visit the Lakeshore Tennis Club website.

Sean LaCap
downs Carl Johnson to capture the 2007 Provincial Open Mens Singles
Championship
July
5:Under warm conditions, Sean LaCap rallied to defeat top seed Carl
Johnson of Antigua 6/4,6/1 in the Mens Singles final of the Bill Ebbels
Provincial Open, played at the Lakeshore Tennis Club in Regina. LaCap, who was
runner-up last year, showed too much strength in his run through the
tournament. His opponent came with many credentials, having played Davis Cup
for his native country, and also having an undefeated run through the
tournament. However, LaCap had too many weapons at the end of the day and ran
out a comfortable winner.
Kyla McNicol captured
her second consecutive Womens Singles title, and also repeated in the Womens
Doubles with partner Evann Waschuk and in the Mixed with Sean LaCap.
It didn't prove to be a
Manitoba clean-sweep, however. Saskatoon players Jordan Christianson and Adrian
Urteaga captured the Mens Doubles title after one of the closest fought battles
in recent memory. The event was a 5 man round robin with all teams in
contention. A withdrawal by Carl Johnson and partner John Carroll had the
tournament director scrambling to review the tie-break rules after a number of
teams had beaten each other. After some cross-checking, Christianson and
Urteaga came out on top, with 3 wins and 1 loss, yet each of those 3 wins went
to closely fought 3 sets.
In the 4.5 & Below
events, Ed Holowaty captured the mens singles title, Lili Wiebe of Saskatoon
captured the Womens Singles, Gregg Tkachuk and Gilbert Lee of Manitoba captured
the Mens Doubles, Lori Mann and Darlene Lee of Manitoba captured the Womens
Doubles, and Glayne Axtell and Dave Bella captured the Mixed Doubles event.
