How Rankings are Calculated

  1. Every player who enters a tournament is placed on a Master Players List.
  2. Basic Points are awarded.

Basic Points (A) are allotted based on how far a player progresses in the draw. For main draws, 10 Basic Points are awarded for every player behind them in the draw (not including themselves). For consolation events, 1 Basic Point is awarded for every person behind them in the draw.

For round robin events, a table (as outlined below) is used to determine the number of Basic Points to award. These Points have been determined based on the number of Points a player may have earned had the event been a main draw with a consolation draw.

For Tier 1 events, 10% is added to the Basic Points earned.
  3. Calculate the Average Basic Points for each player.

Each player’s Basic Points (A) are then tallied and then divided by the number of tournaments they entered for the reporting period. This provides the Player Average Basic Points (B) for each participant.

In order to achieve the critical mass of results to provide accurate rankings and to place as many players on the rankings list as possible, the number of tournaments included in the calculations varies amongst the different categories.

    - Open events include all results for the previous 24 months.
    - Ratings events (example - 5.0, 3.5) include the last 10 tournaments for that category.
    - Senior events include results from the previous 24 months.
    - Junior events include results from the calendar year only.
  4. Each tournament is then weighted.

For every tournament, the total of all its participants Player Average Basic Points (B) is tallied, and then divided by the number of participants in that tournament. This gives us the Tournament Weighting (C).
  5. The players Weighted Points are calculated.
The player’s results are converted to the Player Weighted Points (D) by multiplying each of their Basic Points (A) by the Tournament Weighting (C).
  6. Player Average Weighted Points for each participant are calculated.

Finally, all the Players Weighted Points (D) are summed, and then divided by a divisor as outlined below to arrive at the Players Average Weighted Points (E). This is the points used to determine the order of the rankings.

Where there was only one tournament held in that category for the reporting period, a divisor of 1.0 is used.

Where there were two (2) tournaments held in that category:
If a players entered only 1, the divisor is 1.0.
If they entered both, the divisor is 1.75

Where there were three (3) tournaments held in that category:
If a player entered 1 or 2, the divisor is 2.0
If a player entered all 3, the divisor is 2.75

Where there were four (4) or more tournaments held in that category:
If a player entered 1,2 or 3 events, the divisor is 3.0
If a player entered more than 3 times, the divisor is (0.75 times the number of tournaments entered), plus 0.75
The discounted divisor is to award players who enter multiple tournaments.
  7. Ineligible Players are removed from the list.

Having established the rankings list, players are removed if:
    - they no longer qualify for that category because of age or rating
    - the player is of the wrong gender
    - the player lives out of province
    - the player is not a member / affiliated with Tennis

Saskatchewan, either directly or through membership with an affiliated club / organization

Note that for published end of year rankings (Handbook, Court Talk), a player is also removed if they did not play in that category during the year being reported.
