All tournament participants, including “Rookie” tournament participants, must register on-line using the VR Tournament Planner – Tennis Canada’s tournament management system. Each Rookie tournament participant must have a Tennis Saskatchewan “Recreational” or “Player” membership. There is no cost for a “Recreational” membership. All “Rookie” Tour events are closed to Saskatchewan registered players only. New memberships / renewals are available on-line by clicking here.

The Rogers First Set Tour – Rookie is a national program designed to bridge the gap between entry-level tennis and our provincial competitive junior events. Rookie tournaments encourage players to continue through the tennis pathway to become regular competitors and/or lifelong tennis players. They are for players who are new to the sport and are have less experience in tennis competitions. Events are usually non-elimination / round-robin.

This tournament is open to players 8 – 18 years of age who can serve, rally, and

score and meet the tournament criteria below:

Beginner and intermediate players aged 18 years and younger who wish to compete for the first time.
Players who wish to compete at an introductory level.
Players who have not participated in any / or a minimal number of sanctioned provincial tournaments.

This tournament may be the first official event that a player may be playing in, it should not be the first time that a player has played a practice match and kept score by themselves. Please ask the player’s coach or to verify that a they are ready to play at this level.

Events could be combined boys and girls depending on the number of entries. Each player is guaranteed a minimum of three matches.

No coaching allowed: Do not visually (signals) or verbally communicate with your child during their match to avoid penalties.

No outside officiating: Line calls and scoring disputes must be resolved by Tournament volunteers.

This tournament is sanctioned by Tennis Saskatchewan.
All coaches, parents, players, officials, and spectators must abide by the rules and regulations of the Moose Jaw Tennis Club.
All competitors must be a Tennis Saskatchewan “Recreational” Member (no charge) Tournament member.

Age groups as of January 1st, 2026:

U9 – orange ball, ¾ court (born, 2017, 2018, 2029)
U10 – green ball; full court (born in 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019)
U12 – regular ball; full court (born in 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017)
U14 – regular ball; full court (born in 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015)
U16 – regular ball; full court (born 2010-2013)
U18 – egular ball; full court (born in 2008-2011)

Events: Boys / Girls Singles – U9 ¾ court combined orange ball, U10 full court combined green ball, U12, U14, U16, U18. The Tournament Director reserves the right to cancel or combine events due to insufficient entries (i.e., events may be combined) (Examples – boys and girls events may be combined, U16 and U18 events may be combined).
Ineligible Players – this tournament is for introductory / unranked junior players. Players who have competed in several junior national qualifying events (junior Open events) and / or previously participated in or will be competing at upcoming junior nationals will be considered ineligible. Tennis Saskatchewan reserves the right to decline player entries and / or require players to play in events above their age group (example – an U12 player will be required to play in the U14 age group).
Entry Limit: 1 singles event – plus may also schedule combined doubles events if enough players are interested (Tournament Director to determine teams based on singles results).
Entry Fees: $25.00 / singles event – No charge to play the “fun” doubles event.
Entry Deadline: Wednesday, August 5 at 11:59 p.m.
Players who withdraw from the tournament before the entry deadline will receive a refund less a $10.00 administration fee.
Players who withdraw from the tournament after the entry deadline will be defaulted from the tournament and will not receive a refund of their entry fees.
Draw Times Available: Thursday, August 6 – after 4:00 p.m. or by going on-line at https://tc.tournamentsoftware.com . Players are responsible for confirming their own draw times.
Play Will Begin: Saturday, August 8 – 10:00 a.m. All players must be available to play starting at 10:00 a.m.
Short sets … The Tournament Director reserves the right to revert to an alternate method of scoring for both main draw and consolation draw matches.
No indoor courts available.
Matches will be played on a “to-follow basis”. Please arrive early for your matches.
The 15-minute default and 5-minute warm-up rules will be enforced.
Tennis Canada disciplinary procedures will be enforced. The rule book “Rules of the Court” sets out the rules, regulations, and format to be followed in Sanctioned Tournaments. All Sanctioned Tournaments will be carried out according to these regulations.
Wilson U.S. Open XD tennis balls will be used.
Proper tennis attire is required during matches.

Playing the Tournament (first time players):

Once you have your first match time, players should arrive to the club at least 20 minutes prior to their match time. Players will then approach the Tournament Desk to check-in by letting the Tournament Director know they have arrived. Players will be told if the tournament is running on schedule or behind, and how many matches are to go on court ahead of theirs.

When your match is scheduled to start, the Tournament Director or a Tournament Official (Moose Jaw Tennis Club volunteer) will assign you and your opponent to a court with 3 tennis balls. Players will be given 5 minutes to warm-up (1 minute mini-tennis, 2 minutes baseline rally, 2 minutes serving). After the warm-up, an official will explain the scoring system being used for that match, determine who is serving first, and the match will begin.

During the match, the server shall call the score before every point so both players can keep track. Players can update the scorecards attached to the net after every two games. Please remember that while this is a competitive tournament, fun and good sportsmanship is far more important than winning.

Once a winner has been determined and the match is complete, players will shake hands or racquets at the net. The winner of the match will then collect the balls and return them to the Tournament Desk to register the score of the match.

It is the responsibility of players to find out their next match time by asking the Tournament Desk, or checking the tournament page.

We understand this will be the first or second tournament for most of the players and parents, so please do not hesitate to ask any questions you have before or during the event. Players and parents who have played in more than a few tournaments must be respectful of the other players and all tournament volunteers.

Create your login ID, password, add your email address, etc. Once you have submitted your information, an email with an activation link will be sent to you from the Tennis Canada Tournament Software account. Please click this link in order to active your account. Log into your account to receive your Tennis SK Member ID Once you have an active membership, you can now register for tournaments.

Membership

With an active “Player” membership (Rookie events only require a “Recreational” membership), an individual can register for a Tennis Saskatchewan sanctioned tournament (and/or other provincial / territorial tennis association).

Tennis Canada and the provincial / territorial organizations use the Tournament Planner – Visual Reality Tournament Software.
