Keegan Rice, Regina, recently returned home from the 2022 Under 16 and Under 18 Fischer Indoor National Championships where he finished in second place in both Under 16 singles and doubles events and in sixth place in the Under 18 singles event. What an incredible showing!
In the Under 16 singles event, Rice was dominant, losing only nine games in his first four matches. In the final, Rice lost in three sets to BC’s Denny Bao (4-6, 6-2, 7-5). In the doubles event, unseeded Rice and partner Kai Baerg, Alberta, also cruised through their first three matches, losing only nine games. In the final, Rice and Baerg went up against #1 seeds, Edward Stan (Ontario) and Kuang Qing Xu (Quebec). Once again, another incredibly close match, with Rice and Baerg coming out on the short end, losing 11-9 in the third set super tie-breaker (6-2, 6-1, 11-9).
As a second-year Under 16 player competing in the Under 18 Nationals, Rice continued to impress, battling his way to a sixth place finish in the singles event. Rice was also acknowledged for competing the right way as he earned the Under 18 Sportsmanship Award.
Teah Chavez, also from Regina, was very impressive in the Under 18 girls singles event. Chavez won her first two matches, before losing to finalist, #3 seeded Scarlett Nicholson (Ontario). Chavez wasn’t done just yet, her never give up attitude lead her to four more wins in the consolation draw, before finally losing in the consolation final. A solid sixth place finish for the first-year Under 18 athlete!
Up and coming Isabella Yan (Regina) was competing in only her second ever Junior National Championship but still managed to perform at a high level. In the Under 12 Fischer Nationals girls singles event, Yan won her round robin qualifying group to move on to the Champs Qualifying Event. Yan lost her match in the Champs Qualifying Event before winning three more matches in convincing style to finish in an impressive ninth place. Yan also competed in the Under 14 Championships. Very impressive!!
Also competing in the National Championships were Arya Guha (Under 14) and Ethan Guo (Under 12 and Under 14).
